And then, there were the pumpkins.
The leaves weren’t falling.
There were paths through the cornfield, ones the farmer didn’t remember being there the day before.
Steam rose from the mug. It smelled like apples.
“Keep your hands and feet inside the hayride. Seriously. The last person who disobeyed that rule pulled back a nub.”
She scuffed her feet through fallen leaves, spinning as a few twirled around her.
Flannel shirts were the best defense against the autumn chill and the things in the orchards.
The pumpkins were larger this year. Larger than they’d ever been before.
He pushed glasses up farther on his nose, the bonfire warming his boots.
“There are people who like pumpkin. And people who like apples. And people who like maple. And none of them like each other?” “Accurate. It’s like they’re all at war with one another. And only during the fall.”
He laughed, running ahead of me through the corn maze. Teasing me to find him in the twisting turns.
Crates of apples were stacked, ready from the orchards. Always ready to be sacrificed to the hungry hoards.
There were so many mums. An ocean of mums.
Her fingers curled around the mug, embracing her love of pumpkin, fall, and not caring what anyone thought of her.
The straw bales were stacked up like a wall, to keep the world out.
She shivered against the cool night air, enticing me to wrap arms around her shoulders.
Everyone always went to the high school football games. It was the safest place to be on Friday nights and the band drowned out the sounds of the screams.
His sweater was soft and smelled like woodsmoke.
She painted leaves like it was her job.
“So, you really like pumpkin.”
