Food Tour: Savannah, GA

This winter, a friend and I traveled to Savannah, GA. One of our favorite things to do when in a city is to go on a food tour. So, obviously, we went on a food tour while in Savannah with Savannah Taste Experience!

We had a great time, despite the cold and it being the first time Savannah saw snow in about 20 years. We had a great time teaching Southerners how to walk in the snow and over ice since we were two of the only four Northerners in the group. (Walk like a penguin!)

Our tour guide was a Savannah native, and was obviously very knowledgeable about her hometown. She was fun and we had a great time as she showed us around the city and told us a bit about the people and its history.

Ever been on a food tour? Looking for one while in Savannah? Check this one out.

We went on the Savannah Taste Experience’s First Squares Food Tour. Here’s a brief overview of a few places we stopped.

Tondee’s Tavern

Shrimp and Grits, with Chatham Artillery Punch

Tondee’s is a Savannah favorite, and we had another Southern favorite to eat: Shrimp and Grits. I’ll be totally honest, my only experience with grits before this was horrible and I’d sworn them off. However, I must say that I’ve been converted. Done up right, they’re great, and the shrimp was perfect.

We got it with a glass of Chatham Artillery Punch, originally made by Georgia’s oldest military unit, the Chatham Artillery, since colonial days. Each place makes the cocktail a little different, but it definitely has alcohol in it. Kept us warm on a chilly day!

The Ordinary Pub

Pork Belly Donut Slider and Banana’s Foster French Toast

The idea of eating a sandwich on a donut has never appealed to me. However, the pork belly donut slider was the perfect mix of sweet and salty. Plus, the pork belly was so tender that I almost couldn’t believe it. The slider was a perfect size.

The banana’s faster French Toast was also delicious, and I wish I could have snuck back to steal the recipe.

Between the two, I wish I’d had the chance to eat there again.

Molly MacPherson’s Scottish Pub

Shepherds Pie

Look at the cute little Shepherds Pie! (And ignore the reflection of me in the spoon.) Molly MacPherson’s is a little Scottish pub in a town full of English Pubs. It felt like taking a trip across the ocean into the pubs I’d been in while in the UK. We got mini Shepherds pies, which were perfect on a cold, winter’s day. We were told it was a traditional Scottish recipe, so it was a little different from the English recipe passed down in my family.

Mabel’s Cupcake Emporium

Cupcakes

Not that we could really eat much more by the time we reached our last stop, but these cupcakes were delicious. We were given some options of flavors (depending on what they’d made that day.) Which I’m usually much more adventurous, I was towards the end of the line and got vanilla.

I can’t say that it’s the best cupcake I’ve ever had (that’s reserved for a place in my hometown and Sprinkles in DC). However, they were moist and soft, with the perfect amount of icing.

These are just a few of the places we stopped at. If you want to try everything, check out Savannah Taste Experience.
